The beauty of this solution is that it allows you to treat this new Theme as if though it would actually be live and that means you also have a new set of sidebars where you need to configure your widgets to get the result you’re looking for.

I’ve used Genesis on quite a few sites and really like it. Customizing your child theme, especially with their plugins, is nice and easy. I’ve been debating checking out Thematic since it’s free though.

No need to worry about that. Anything you do in the child theme, and I literally mean anything you do in a child theme will never have any impact on what’s going on in the parent theme. So no, that’s not a valid concern

Am debating between the Genesis and Thesis framework at the moment and finding it quite difficult to decide. I understand the concept of parent-child themes but am concerned that if I make huge customisations in the child theme, it might not work as well when the parent theme is updated… not sure if I’m being paranoid! The main customisation in the child themes involve bringing in RSS feeds from a few of my other sites to make a consolidated ‘magazine’ type site. Is this a valid concern?

Having worked with both, Genesis definitely is the best choice for you. Besides the features it's a lot more scalable, easier to work with plus the support forum is much better in my opinion. Do check out the Prose child theme option for maximum flexibility.

Hi,
This is a good post. Nice overview of all the features, but it has left me in complete confusion. I am looking for a WP framework and have zeroed in on Genesis and Thesis. This is the first time I will be using a framework and so both these are new to me. A little confused as to which I was to go with. I was almost sold for the thesis framework, that is, till I read this post. Can you suggest which framework is better for me to create a site like filehippo.com. Want to achieve that tabled feel and should be scalable.
